Wordle strategy: solve in fewer guesses

Wordle rewards a simple plan: test common letters early, then use what you learn to cut the options down as fast as possible.

Pick a starting word with common letters

The letters that appear most often in five-letter words are E, A, R, O, T, L, I and S. Openers like CRANE, SLATE, TRACE and RAISE test several of them at once.

Use your second guess to test new letters

If the first guess gives you little, don't reuse its letters. A second word built from entirely fresh common letters, such as SLATE followed by CORNY, covers ten letters in two guesses.

Watch for double letters

Many answers repeat a letter, like SPEED or FLOOR. If you're stuck with several possibilities, consider that a letter might appear twice.

Use position, not just letters

A yellow letter tells you where it isn't. Write down the possible positions for each letter you've found and you'll often see the answer.

Narrow it down with word lists

Once you know the first or last letter, our lists of five-letter words by starting and ending letter show every option, along with the most common letter that follows.
